Historical Context - Initial Ideas - OC LM

 History of Horror:

-Locations of gothic horror: old castles, gloomy forests, dungeons.

-Famous gothic writers refer to: Mary Shelley, Bram stoker and Edgar allan poe.

-Sound plays an extremely large role in horror.

-Val Lewton, refer to his work. He created scares with mood and shadow rather than make-up and monsters, good for psychological genre.

-Alfred Hitchcock-Psycho. He created more natural horror, less monsters, reference.

-Blood being shown on screen comes across as chilling.

-Terror in the backyard or everyday suburbia works, in the slasher sub-genre.

 -Torture porn, emphasises blood and gore, cycle of saw, the most successful horror franchise.

-Found footage sub-genre, piecing together first hand footage, to reconstruct last moments of victim

-Zombie apocalypse cycle, feed on fear of a medical pandemic, and breakdown of society and civilisation.
