Key Iconography of Possession Horror:
-Children are often used as the character that is possessed,
a stereotypical child is usually associated with been innocent and with a clear
conscience. But in possession films this idea is juxtaposed as they represented
as dangerous and violent with them becoming the antagonist in the film.
-Houses are usually used as this promotes fear factor the
film is trying to scare you as it is trying to highlight that it could happen
to anyone. You normally feel safest when at home, possession horrors challenge
this as the house is the environment where the monster lurks.
-Aesthetics are used on the possessed character throughout possession horrors this is to try
and accentuate the gruesome nature of been possessed . This adds to the fear of
the antagonist as they are presented as near human which is proven to scare
humans.
-Religion is another technique used to create more horror in
a possession film. Usually a priest or vicar approaches the antagonist and
speaks from the bible to the antagonist. This is because the monster in the
film has strong connotations of the devil in these types of horrors. This adds
to the realism of possession films as it may be seen that the devil can get to
us within are homes, which will perceived by most people as scary.
