0:00-0:08

Tracking shot of Richie (protagonist) through the woods

External location of the dark woods create enigma and fear

0:08-0:11

Mid close up of Richie as he walks

Unbuttoned shirt and sweat implies he’s exhausted therefore offguard, and more vulnerable to attack

0:11-0:15

POV shot from Richie’s perspective

Glow stick prop shines in the darkness to attract attention

0:15-0:28

Mid shot of Ritchie stopping to call for friend Wade

External location with plants and trees around him, implying that something is hidden

0:28-0:30

Shot of the glow stick hidden underneath the bush

Prop of the glow stick used to help uncover the enigma of what is going on

0:30-0:36

Panning shot beginning with Ritchie ending with Wade’s ear

The prop of the glow stick shines the light towards the dismembered ear creating fear

0:36-0:38

Short pedding shot from the floor up to Ritchie’s face to show his reaction

External location contains bushes which are used in the shot to creating the sense of something being hidden

0:38-0:39

Over the shoulder shot from Ritchie’s side looking upon Wade’s corpse

Make-up used on Wade to make him a dead body

0:39-0:40

Zooming mid close up of the face of Wade’s corpse

Again the make-up used on Wade to make him look like he was killed in cold blood

0:40-0:41

Close up of Amanda’s face as she begins to fear

The internal location of the tent makes Amanda vulnerable as she doesn’t know what is outside

0:41-0:44

Mid shot of Amanda as she backs away into the corner of the tent, with the shadow of Jason (antagonist) behind her

The lighting provides a shadow to be created on the tent creating fear as we don’t know who’s shadow it is

0:44-0:45

Shot of the tent behind Amanda’s head being cut open by Jason’s machete

The light on the tent is removed as the rip shows nothing but the darkness outside

0:45-0:46

Mid shot from inside the tent of Jason ripping it open

Character blocking used as Jason is placed behind Amanda so that  she can’t see him

0:46-0:50

Handicam close up of Jason as he grabs Amanda and drags her from the tent

Costume of the mask is used for the antagonist, creating enigma as we don’t actually know who he is

0:50-0:56

Pedding shot from Wade’s body up to Ritchie who turns and runs in fear

Ambient lighting through the trees, so only some spots are light some are dark, making the location scary

0:56-0:57

Tracking shot of Ritchie running through the woods

Trees are part of the set and pass through the shot creating the idea of somewhere to hide for the antagonist

0:57-1:01

Steadicam moving shot as Ritchie runs towards camera, eventually becoming a close up to see his reaction to what he’s seen

Character blocking is used effectively as Ritchie is placed in the middle alone of the woods already in shock after Wade and then returns to find Amanda in danger

1:01-1:03

Mid long shot of Amanda hanging from a tree in a sleeping bag being burnt above the campfire

External location is used to set up the danger, as she hangs from a tree above the campfire

Close up of Ritchie who then runs out of the shot towards Amanda

Bushes in the environment getting in his way

1:04-1:05

The prop of the sleeping bag is used creatively as it’s not a conventional murder that occurs in horror

1:05-1:07

Low angle handicam close up of Ritchie running towards  camera

1:07-1:08

Ground level shot of Ritchie’s legs running and one leg getting caught in a bear trap

Prop of the bear trap used to prevent Ritchie from saving the damsel in distress

1:08-1:09

Close up of the injury caused to Ritchie’s leg by the trap

Despite not being a prop in the film, it’s likely that a fake leg prop was made to create the injury, making it look real

1:09-1:11

Close up of Ritchie’s face to show reaction of pain

Non-verbal language is effective as we see the genuine pain in Ritchie’s face

1:11-1:12

Shot of the leg in the trap, Ritchie tries to move it causing more pain

Again prop of the leg and trap

1:12-1:15

Costume, as they have made Ritchie sweaty and covered in dirt, showing how hard he’s trying

1:15-1:17

Shot from the outside, showing the sleeping bag with Amanda inside struggling around trying to get out
The bright orange colour of the fire is what the shot revolves around, making it effective

1:17-1:19

Close up of Amanda inside the sleeping bag screaming

The lighting is dim as the sleeping bag is zipped up, making it not entirely clear to see her face

1:19-1:20

Handicam close up of Ritchie’s face as he still tries to break free

Non-verbal language again used as Ritchie displays his emotions

1:20-1:22

Close up of Ritchie’s hand as he tried pulling the trap apart

The prop of the bear trap is key as Ritchie is stuck

1:22-1:24

Character blocking is used as Ritchie must sit and watch on as Amanda gets burned

Shot of the fire burning the sleeping bag

Pro-filmic effects to make the fire so blazing

1:41-1:44

Close up of Amanda’s burnt body on the floor

Pro-filmic effects and make-up used to create a burned body

  •  This sequence from Friday the 13th links in to the idea for my own opening sequence. One main reason is the location is exactly the same, as we expect to have our film set in a woodland area.
  • As well as this it features a female protagonist who becomes the victim to the antagonist, which is also a similar circumstance that is likely to feature in the opening of our film.
  • We also see some props feature that we would also like to include, the main one being the long knife/sword that the antagonist carries in his hand
  • There is also some very effective sound in this extract that would be expected to be included in our film. For example the diegetic sound of the girl screaming as she is taken victim to the antagonist.
